Development of Molecular Bases and Testing of New Breeding Technologies for Plant Breeding

The project looks for solutions to the challenges faced by the plant-breeding sector. Agroscope provides breeders with the basic requirements – e.g the identification, mapping and development of molecular markers for the marker-supported selection of resistance sources, the understanding of resistance mechanisms, and information on the occurrence of virulent strains. New breeding technologies are developing at breakneck speed. Varieties that are already established on the market could be improved efficiently with these technologies, without losing their positive traits. The boundaries between the products of these new breeding techniques and conventionally bred plants are growing increasingly fuzzy. We investigate the opportunities and ecological risks posed by the prototypes from these new breeding technologies in the laboratory, greenhouse and field.
