Resource-Efficient Pig Production

The efficient use of protein and phosphorus is a central goal in pig production due to scarce resources and environmental concerns. There is the potential to reduce their levels in the diet and thus reduce the use of soy products and phosphates. Within a herd, animals differ in their protein efficiency. The researchers are investigating the reasons for the differences between protein-efficient and non-efficient animals and their differences in performance and meat quality. They are also investigating alternative feeds as substitutes for soy protein for pig fattening - in particular insect or algae products. Central to this project is the breeding of protein-efficient pigs. Researchers are therefore exploring the genetic potential of resource efficiency and probing genomic markers for protein and phosphorus efficiency.
