RegioFoodLCA: Regionalised LCA for a sustainable agri-food production

Environmental impacts of agriculture can vary significantly depending on local conditions. Yet, lifecycle assessment (LCA) models and databases typically operate at a global or national scales, often overlooking regional variations in emissions and impacts. In addition, assessing environmental impacts of imported foods presents unique challenges, as national averages often mask significant regional variations within exporting countries of large size. The main objective of this project is to better capture regional variations in LCA studies towards more representative environmental impact assessments. To achieve that, we will develop enhanced methods for regionalised LCA of agri-food production in Switzerland and abroad. More specfically, we will build on recent advances in spatial data resources allowing for improved quantification of environmental impacts at sub-national level. The newly developed methods will help to identify alternatives to current food sourcing portfolios, and the extent to which they could contribute to reducing the environmental impacts associated with Swiss food consumption.
