BestWine: Optimisation of robust grape varieties

One part of the solution in diminishing the use of plant protection products is cultivating robust grape varieties. The BestWine project focuses on certified robust grape varieties that have been deemed robust enough to be on the Federal Office of Agriculture’s (FOAG) list of subsidized grape varieties. Currently, these varieties represent 2.98% of the total vineyard area in Switzerland (FOAG 2025). To achieve the goals of the FOAG it is essential to cultivate larger areas of these varieties. As reflected in both stakeholder needs and in co-creative interactions with the wine industry, information on up-to-date plant protection strategies, optimal wine production methods for each variety, including spontaneous fermentation, and advantageous marketing strategies are still lacking. This project aims to fill these gaps by optimizing these varieties across the value chain. Results will provide robust, science-based recommendations for practitioners and policymakers, directly supporting the FOAG’s PPP reduction targets while strengthening the resilience and sustainability of Swiss viticulture.
