Interreg Project 'Digital fruit production'

Fruit growing is a key economic factor in the ABH region and has shaped its cultural landscape for decades. The post-harvest sector – storage and marketing – is central, as it determines product quality and marketability. Yet, rising energy costs, climate change, and stricter crop protection laws threaten farms’ livelihoods by increasing storage losses. The project aims to strengthen resilience by developing innovative storage technologies focused on three areas: creating reliable databases for intelligent, energy-efficient control of refrigeration, ventilation, and atmosphere systems; reducing physiological and rotting losses through optimised conditions, including dynamically controlled low-oxygen atmospheres; and developing non-destructive methods for continuous fruit monitoring to identify risk batches early. Concepts will be tested by research partners and piloted in commercial warehouses. An interactive digital manual will provide tools for companies to apply models to their own parameters, promoting practical adoption.
