MountChange: Site-adapted mountain grassland management in the context of climate change

Within the framework of the Research Stations for Alpine and Mountain Farming, a co-creation process between Agroscope and five cantons (VS, BE, UR, TI, GR) has been implemented. The main aim was to identify solutions to the issue of climate change impact on mountain grassland yield, quality, and management. Three main research topics and sub-projects were identified and will be developed:

  1. the assessment of alpine pasture yield along the altitudinal gradient in different vegetation types and over several years,
  2. the development of drought-resistant grassland mixtures to adapt to the increasing frequency and intensity of summer droughts,
  3. the development and comparison of the effectiveness of different grazing treatments to reduce dwarf shrub encroachment.
