SIMONE: Systemic innovations with multiple performance evaluated in on-farm experimentations

In order to ensure a fair, healthy and green EU food system, it is necessary to reduce pesticide and nutrient use and to ensure sustainable farming systems. SIMONE will drive this agroecological transition in the NWE area. This ambitious four-year project addresses three major issues faced by farmers at the cropping system level:

  1. integrated weed management,
  2. sustainable crop nutrition
  3. crop resilience management.

While many agroecological measures already exist, they require inventorying, evaluation and adaptation to specific farm conditions. Six Living Labs (LL) will be set up to strengthen (inter-)regional cooperation, define the needs of farmers and actors, and identify possible agroecological transition paths. The partners will co-develop simulators to predict the most effective combinations of measures based on technical, economic, and environmental indicators at local and regional levels. Farmers will then implement and evaluate these measures through on-farm experiments (OFEs). Finally, cross-fertilisation will be strongly encouraged through impactful dissemination and collaboration activities, with the aim of reaching at least 10,000 stakeholders.
