REUSE: Recycling urban and industrial wastes in agriculture towards a circular economy

The production synthetic fertilizers requires high demand of energy from fossil fuels. In this project we test the feasibility of recycling of industrial and urban wastes as fertilizers or soil amendments. The first objective aims at recycling clean wood ashes as K fertilizer. The second goal aims at testing the recycling of frass (a by-product from insect rearing) as fertilizer/biostimulant for arable crops and for vegetables/fruits production. The third goal is the recycling of animal ashes as clean P fertilizer. The fourth goal concerns the recycling of ligneous residues as soil amendment to increase organic matter. The fifth goal is to assess the environmental efficiency of innovative soil improvers derived from municipal organic residues and okara. The sixth goal of the project aimts at recycling struvite-containing deposits from a wastewater treatment plant as P fertilizer. The REUSE project brings together different expertise within Agroscope that will allow to study the effects of recycled products in terms of both crop nutrition and soil health.
