Replacing mineral fertilisers

Nitrogen surpluses in Swiss agriculture average 90 kg/ha annually, with only one-third recovered in food, causing pollution, biodiversity loss, and climate impacts. Switzerland aims to cut surpluses by 15% by 2030. The BLW-funded project Mineraldünger ersetzen seeks to boost nitrogen use efficiency by reducing manure nitrogen losses by developing processing technologies and producing alternatives to mineral fertilizers. Twelve pilot sites will test methods such as separation, ammonia stripping, evaporation, and composting. Agroscope assesses impacts across technological, field, and farm levels using Suisse-Bilanz 2.0. Activities include nutrient monitoring, farmer training, and stakeholder engagement. The project provides evidence, supports policy, and enables implementation, advancing Switzerland’s nitrogen reduction goals.
