TUBA: Understanding and using biodiversity as an integral part of sustainable agriculture
TUBA is a transdisciplinary applied research project that aims to develop a concept to promote pollinators and pollination services as core elements of sustainable agricultural systems. In response to the global decline in pollinators, TUBA introduces a farmer–citizen science approach that integrates agricultural practice, societal perspectives and scientific expertise. The project comprises seven work packages, the outcomes of which feed into four interlinked monitoring modules:
- fostering a multi-stakeholder community for dialogue and co-creation;
- developing and testing standardised methods for monitoring pollinators and pollination;
- applying landscape and agent-based modelling to plan and evaluate biodiversity measures;
- designing indicators for monitoring pollinators, pollination services and habitat diversity at farm and cantonal scales.
TUBA also explores population genomic monitoring and pesticide residue analysis to increase its ecological and regulatory relevance. Through participatory research, TUBA strengthens the interface between science, practice and policy, delivering actionable knowledge and fostering societal engagement with ecosystem services.
