CLEAR-2-50: Potential of legumes to improve the resistance and resilience of crop rotations

The main objective of this project is to assess the impact of climate change on the performance of crop rotations and evaluate possibilities to improve their resilience and resistance with respect to climate change through the introduction of legume crops, such as soybean, lentils and chickpea. A second key objective is to examine the effects of legumes in crop rotations on water and N use efficiency, N losses and GHG emissions. Process-based model DayCent will be used for the analysis, which will enable exploring potential co-benefits or trade-offs. The basis for the assessment will be the new climate change scenarios (CH2025). In work package 1 (WP1), the model performance based on comparison with field data will be assessed. In WP2, we will address the impact of climate change on crop growth, yields and yield stability. WP3 is focused on water dynamics and water use efficiency. The impacts on N use efficiency and N losses, and the soil organic C storage for GHG emission budgeting will be addressed in WP4. The activities in WP5 are focused on dissemination of the results among stakeholders, with emphasis on practical-oriented information, with indication of adaptation measures.
