WeDisco: Discovery and integration of novel wheat traits
Diversification through traits discovery and integration into elite cultivars represents major key-success factors in breeding programs, as demonstrated by the dwarfing genes success story. Our WeDisco project aims to
- Discover novel traits needed for the future wheat breeding program
- Discover genes and QTLs, underlying novel trait diversity
- Integrate promising genes and QTLs into the elite materials
- Evaluate the added value and benefits of the integrated traits
- Discovery will improve yield backing quality, tolerance to abiotic stresses and disease, especially Fusarium headblight.
WeDisco will associate precise phenotyping of very genetically diverse wheat cultivars with genetic data through GWAS and GS to detect new genes of interest. It will develop innovative tools as the kmer-based GWAS and GS will be developed.
Trait integration of is done by marker assisted backcrossing (MABC) and marker assisted selection (MAS). The newly integrated traits will be evaluated for their effects on others agronomy traits. Altogether WeDisco represents the cornerstone of Swiss wheat adaptation to future challenges and contributes to more sustainable farming.
