AlgoScope: Pioneering research for the Swiss Microalgae Collection

AlgoScope establishs Switzerland’s first curated collection of indigenous microalgae strains as a national genetic resources platform. The project will expand the collection with new strains from diverse environments, implement dual long-term preservation (cryopreservation and drying), and generate genomic datasets for priority strains. Baseline phenotypic profiles (growth, biochemical composition, aroma) will be produced as essential information for downstream use. All results will be curated in BCRepo (sister project MicroScope), ensuring traceability and international compatibility. Collection management will be modernised through higher-throughput workflows, automated annotation, and bioinformatics pipelines. Feedback data from applied projects (digestibility, in vivo trials, bioactivity) will also be integrated. Dissemination will occur via publications, workshops, and controlled open-access datasets. AlgoScope will deliver the Swiss Microalgae Collection as a national reference platform, securing genetic resources, accelerating strain selection, and enabling sustainable innovation in food, feed, plant health, and CO₂ mitigation.
