QO-MEL: Introduction, spread and control of nematodes Meloidogyne chitwoodi and M. fallax
Plant-parasitic nematodes affect nearly all major crops, causing significant global economic losses. In Switzerland, root-knot nematodes (Meloidogyne spp., esp. M. hapla and M. incognita) are key pests in vegetable fields and greenhouses. Recently, two additional species, M. chitwoodi (2019) and M. fallax (2021) were detected. Both are quarantine organisms, making knowledge of their origin, distribution, and management critical for Swiss agriculture. This project proposes extensive surveys of Swiss fields and greenhouses to assess dissemination. Using phylogenetic analysis, we aim to trace introduction pathways, characterize nematode populations, and evaluate resistant cultivars adapted to Swiss conditions. The ultimate goal is to support growers with effective and sustainable management strategies.
