ROCSUB: Restoration of compacted subsoil
During the construction of the new AO building on the Agroscope site in Nyon, Parcelle 17 was used for several years as an intermediate storage site for excavated material. The pile of excavation material reached heights up to 10 meters. As a result of this procedure, severe and harmful soil compaction occurred at soil depths between 20 and 80 cm. After the damage had been detected by local authorities, it was decided to use the site for studying the recovery of severely compacted subsoil. The main objectives of this project are i) to describe the effect of various combinations of restoration measures on the regeneration of the impaired soil structure, as well as ii) to determine the compaction effects on soil properties and soil functions (in particular plant growth and water balance) and iii) on the yield of crops of agricultural interest. This project has provided and will further provide practical information on the effectiveness of various combinations of measures for restoring the structural quality of compacted subsoils, in particular for Cantonal soil protection enforcement, soil science consultants, and federal soil protection officers.
