Internet of Things (IoT): Umbrella project for better management of agricultural systems

The rapid technical development of sensor systems goes hand in hand with efficient and inexpensive transmission to the Internet, allowing much better control and management of agricultural systems. The so-called Internet of Things (IoT) technology for agricultural use is being further developed at Agroscope (AGS) through several projects using a unified in-house IoT platform. The project will tackle very different use cases which are prone to show a high added value by implementing IoT-Systems, e.g.: contribute to reducing water consumption through automated, dendrometer-controlled irrigation systems; improving crop protection through innovative bird deterrent technologies; minimising nutrient losses through precise, sensor-based nitrate monitoring and optimised fertilisation; reducing greenhouse gas emissions through real-time monitoring of methane concentrations; and reducing the energy consumption of hay ventilation systems. In addition, the project can facilitate data sharing with national partners such as MeteoSwiss. Ultimately, this project will promote sustainable agricultural practices, reduce environmental impact and improve the efficiency and cost-effectiveness of farming
