Enhancing the assessment of environmental impacts with advanced SALCA models

SALCA (Swiss Agricultural Life Cycle Assessment) has been developed as a method and toolbox specifically geared towards life cycle assessment (LCA) of the Swiss agricultural and food sector. SALCA can be applied to assess the environmental impacts of crop and animal products, production systems, farms, parts of the agricultural sector or the entire agricultural sector including foreign trade. At the core of SALCA, there are models for emissions and resource use caused by crop production and livestock husbandry. SALCA also provides a list of methods to assess the environmental impact of these emissions and resource uses. This project aims at maintaining, updating and enhancing the SALCA models and tools. Specific adaptation needs of the biodiversity, erosion, and nitrate emission models have already been identified and will be implemented. Adaptation needs for other SALCA models will be defined and implemented likewise. In addition, this project will provide a functioning, up-to-date model and tool structure for LCA of agriculture, which is the basis for other projects in the activity program as well as for upcoming requests from stakeholders and third-party-funded research.
