Pilot project: digital management of cover crops

Adequate soil cover is essential for maintaining key ecosystem services and safeguarding soil as a finite resource, thus supporting the foundation of sustainable food production. This pilot project investigates whether the policy requirement of "adequate soil cover" (Art. 71c DZV) can be further developed and digitally implemented using satellite imagery, in line with the goals of the Swiss agri-food sector’s Vision 2050. In preparation for the AP30+ agricultural policy, the project aims to design a targeted soil cover monitoring system and assess the feasibility of fully automated measurements. The focus lies on cover crops, where significant research gaps remain. To evaluate the reliability of this automated method, extensive crop-specific field validation campaigns will be conducted. Ultimately, the results will demonstrate whether enforcement of the policy can be streamlined through a standardized, nationwide digital solution. Collaboration with a cantonal system is planned to define practical and technical requirements.
