Furterh development of the Swiss Soil Monitoring Network (NABO)

Switzerland is legally required to conduct nationwide soil monitoring under the Ordinance on Soil Pollution (VBBo). The National Soil Monitoring (NABO) has relied on 114 reference sites covering arable land, grassland, and forests, but soils with extreme characteristics were under-represented, and chemical, physical, and biological data collection was not fully synchronized. Following a 2018 assessment, an advanced soil monitoring network (SMN) is being developed with up to 150 sites to better represent Switzerland’s pedoclimatic and management diversity. Basic monitoring of chemical, physical, and biological soil parameters will occur every 10 years, while intensive monitoring of 75–100 sites—including pesticide residues and management data—will take place every 3–4 years. The project aims to improve site representativity, strengthen collaboration between federal and cantonal programs, increase farmer participation, and support current and future NABO modules, providing a system-level approach to soil monitoring for long-term success.
