Cette étude présente un indicateur agro-environnemental de la couverture du sol développé dans le cadre du monitoring
agro-environnemental mis en place par l’Office fédéral de l’agriculture (OFAG). Cet indicateur est construit de façon à refléter
les pratiques agricoles telles que le type de cultures, la rotation des cultures et les pratiques culturales. Il intègre à la fois des
données techniques et des données issues de simulations faites à l’aide d’un modèle de culture. Cet outil a été appliqué aux
données issues du Dépouillement centralisé des indicateurs agro-environnementaux (DC-IAE), ce qui représente en moyenne 226
exploitations sur cinq années. Les résultats montrent qu’une exploitation de grandes cultures n’atteint en moyenne que 62% de couverture du sol, nettement moins que les presque 100% d’une exploitation herbagère. Certaines cultures présentent une couverture du sol lacunaire, le blé d’automne en particulier, qui n’atteint en moyenne que 44% de couverture. Toutefois, certaines
pratiques culturales telles que la mise en place de cultures intermédiaires pendant la période d’interculture et la gestion des
résidus de culture permettent d’améliorer considérablement le taux moyen de couverture du sol.
