U-FARM: Urban Farming für agroökologische Resilienz und Multifunktionalität
Biodiversity loss is of global concern and worldwide, the population is gravitating toward cities. Recent crises, from pandemics, wars, to economic turmoil, have highlighted the vulnerability of urban populations to food shortages when faced with disruptions to global and national supply chains. Recent studies indicate that urban farming could be a substantial source of fresh produce to urban populations. Moreover, urban greenspaces have been shown to play important roles in the provision of ecosystem services, such as biodiversity promotion, climate regulation, water infiltration, and social and psychological well-being. The potential of urban farming to contribute to urban food self-sufficiency and to ecosystem services is hardly investigated. The extent and quantities of food currently and potentially produced are hardly known. Using a citizen science approach, U-FARM will investigate current food production, biodiversity, and the provision of ecosystem services on Swiss urban farming areas. It will develop strategies for scaling urban food production and biodiversity promotion and provide key information to increase food security, biodiversity and the resilience of cities.
