PaddyRice: Nassreisanbau in der Schweiz

On the Swiss Central Plateau, many agricultural soils are waterlogged, reducing yields and requiring costly drainage. Converting these areas to grassland affects food production and farm income. Paddy rice cultivation offers a promising alternative by maintaining production, reducing soil shrinkage, and supporting wetland biodiversity. Since 2017, Agroscope, HAFL, and partners have conducted pilot trials showing the crop’s potential as a profitable niche product despite challenges like weed control and water management. Multi-year field trials and close collaboration with farmers aim to improve cultivation techniques, assess environmental impacts, and develop ecological standards. Findings will be shared through guides, certification labels, and a documentary to support sustainable paddy rice production in Switzerland.
