FertiCrop: Principles of field-crop fertilisation adapted for site conditions and plant needs

Adapting fertilization recommendations to site-specific conditions opens new opportunities to increase fertilizer use efficiency in Switzerland. The FertiCrop project aims to generate and coordinate the scientific knowledge required to adjust fertilization of field crops to match with plant needs, soil quality, agricultural practices and the site pedoclimatic conditions. Special emphasis is placed on balanced crop nutrition, including sulphur and micronutrients, to foster nutrient use efficiency. By providing and coordinating the scientific prerequisites for the Principles of fertilization of agricultural crops in Switzerland (PRIF), the project actively contributes to updating several PRIF chapters, fertilization norms, and fertilization recommendation methods (e.g. corrected norms, Nmin) that can be directly implemented by a large panel of stakeholders in the Swiss agriculture. In parallel, the project supports the development of smart farming tools based on plant and soil nutritional status. With its ambition to bridge research and practice, FertiCrop not only advances fundamental scientific understanding but also delivers practical methods ready for implementation.
