LAVA: Leaching and aquifer vulnerability assessment

Hotspots contribute disproportionately to the contamination of drinking water wells with pesticides. Mitigation strategies focussing on hotspots would be a promising management option to substantially lower the input of pesticides into the groundwater and thus to protect drinking water resources. In this project, groundwater vulnerability maps will be derived for areas of contribution of drinking water wells using numerical simulation models, with geo-referenced data on relevant environmental factors and pesticide-related properties as input. Vulnerability maps derived for different management options quantify the impact of these mitigation strategies at the landscape scale and may support the process of decision making to reduce the risk of groundwater contamination.
