National gene bank of plant genetic resources for food and agriculture

The Swiss National Genebank safeguards plant genetic resources vital for biodiversity, sustainable agriculture, and food security. Facing challenges like climate change, habitat loss, and declining diversity, it conserves both local and international plant materials. Its work follows global agreements such as the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD), the International Treaty on Plant Genetic Resources for Food and Agriculture (IT-PGRFA), and the FAO’s Global Plan of Action.
The genebank ensures systematic acquisition, regeneration, and characterization of collections with more than 14'000 entries, while sharing data openly to support research, innovation, and crop breeding. Collaboration with farmers, researchers, and partners strengthens its impact and ensures wide access to resources.

Looking ahead, the genebank is committed to new technologies, outreach, and partnerships to keep its collections valuable for agriculture, science, and society—contributing to biodiversity conservation and food security for future generations.
