NEXTPHEN: Next-generation phenomics at Agroscope
Phenotyping is a key task in plant breeding and variety testing. It consists in measuring and describing plant characteristics such as performance, yield, quality and abiotic and biotic stress resistance. Selection processes and variety testing rely heavily on phenotyping. Next generation phenomics at Agroscope (NEXTPHEN) aims to improve plant breeding and variety testing efficiency through advanced digital phenotyping methods to measure agronomic traits, disease resistance, and stress tolerance more accurately. It will be done for winter cereals, legumes, and forages. NEXTPHEN represents a comprehensive effort to advance digital phenotyping and it anticipates the deployment of more than 15 novel digital phenotyping methods by its conclusion that will allow to extend the possibilities of Agroscope with more than 25 new parameters that can be measured digitally and used for breeding and variety testing of winter cereals, legumes, and forages. These methods will significantly reduce the effort required for routine variety characterization and contribute to more efficient breeding processes.
