SOCOLD: Microplastics in soil and in cold climatic regions

The use of plastic in agriculture has been identified as a relevant input source to soils, which in turn are one of the major sinks of microplastic (MP) in the environment. Together with Eawag and Empa, we are establishing analytical methodologies for MP analysis in soil and execute initial monitoring campaigns in collaboration with the NABO. Results are due by the end of 2026 and will provide a first overview of the presence of MP in various soils of Switzerland. Following up on this research, within the EU Horizon Europe project “Arctic pollution in a One Health perspective – from complex challenges to sustainable solutions (ArcSolution)”, we will investigate the occurrence, fate and behavior of MP in alpine and arctic environments, with a focus on atmospheric transport and deposition.
