Dans le cadre du PNR 69, des scientifiques ont développé une approche permettant d’évaluer la performance environnementale des exploitations agricoles. Ils l’ont ensuite appliquée à un petit échantillon d’exploitations laitières de région de montagne. Sur la base de leurs travaux, ils appellent à considérer de façon distincte à la fois la performance environnementale locale et globale des exploitations. En effet, une éco-efficacité globale élevée est souvent associée à une faible performance environnementale locale, et vice-versa. Ces résultats montrent le danger des approches unilatérales couramment utilisées. Ils permettent en outre d’identifier les facteurs capables d’améliorer la performance environnementale locale, globale et la performance économique des exploitations laitières de région de montagne.
