Speed breeding, phenotyping and genotyping in wheat
The WeSpeedBreed project aims to accelerate wheat breeding by integrating speed breeding (SB), speed phenotyping, and speed genotyping to faster achieve homozygous lines, and improve trait discovery and genetic gain. This project will optimize SB protocols for reduced generation time and efficient resource use, improve large-scale double haploid (DH) production, and develop phenotyping methods for key biotic and abiotic traits such as disease resistance and frost tolerance. High-throughput genotyping will support marker-assisted and genomic selection, while mapping populations will be created using SB and DH for precise genetic analysis. Early recurrent selection based on genomic predictions and phenotyping will further accelerate breeding. The integration of these approaches will enable faster development of improved wheat varieties, contributing to sustainable agriculture.
