A typology of sustainable farm-household strategies in Switzerland

This project develops an empirically grounded typology of Swiss farm-household strategies to support the transition toward sustainable agri-food systems. Building on diversification as a key driver of transformative change, it conceptualizes farm strategies within a three-dimensional diversification space, i.e., horizontal diversification (variety of crop and livestock activities), vertical diversification (farm-related non-farm activities such as direct marketing, agritourism, or contracting), and lateral diversification (off-farm income generation). Using AGIS census data, FADN microdata, and georeferenced datasets, the project will identify and map strategy clusters for 2015 - 2023 and analyze their spatial and temporal evolution. The resulting typology will improve our understanding of structural change and inform evidence-based policy and advisory services in Switzerland.
