PROTECT: Produits phytosanitaires et arthropodes non ciblés – Amélioration de l'évaluation des risques

Before pesticides (Plant Protection Products, PPPs) are approved for use, they must undergo environmental risk assessments to ensure they don’t harm beneficial insects like pollinators, predators, and decomposers. However, concerns remain about their impact on biodiversity, especially in areas like flower strips and field edges. The PROTECT project aims to better understand how PPPs affect these beneficial species in and around crops. It focuses on improving knowledge of insect communities, assessing pesticide drift into flower strips, and evaluating how well current risk assessments protect pollinators, natural enemies and other non-target arthropods. The project also studies how flower strips can reduce pesticide risks. Results will be shared with Swiss authorities and farmers, including practical advice on designing flower strips and managing nearby crops. By promoting biodiversity-friendly practices, PROTECT supports sustainable farming and healthier ecosystems.
