Tradepole: effetti delle misure di politica commerciale sull'ambiente
Imports play a major role in the environmental impact of the Swiss agri-food system. Trade policy measures – such as connecting certain environmental standards to trade agreements – can influence the amount, type and provenance of imported foods and feeds. Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) serves to evaluate the environmental impacts of agricultural products, systems or policies. However, with the existing LCA data, environmental impacts can only partly be traced back to the country where they originally occur. The data basis needs to be enhanced and harmonized to support recommendations for trade policy development. This project aims at identifying the largest levers to reduce the environmental impacts of Swiss imports of agricultural commodities. In addition, it will analyze the effects of non-tariff measures on agri-food trade structure and import prices and define trade policy scenarios targeting the environmental hotspots will. Finally, trade policy recommendations to minimize the environmental impacts caused by Swiss food consumption abroad will be derived. This information will be communicated to stakeholders to enable them to integrate this knowledge into their import strategies.
