Esperimenti varietali sistemici con pomodori resistenti al ToBRFV

Tomatoes are the most popular vegetable in Switzerland, with each person eating over 10 kg a year. Half of this demand is covered by Swiss production, around 50,000 tonnes annually. A new virus, Tomato Brown Rugose Fruit Virus (ToBRFV), has recently reached Switzerland and poses a serious threat: when detected, farmers must stop production and disinfect their greenhouses, leading to high costs. Since 2023, seed companies have released tomato varieties resistant to the virus, but no one knows yet if they are suited to Swiss growing conditions or consumer expectations. This project brings together researchers, farmers, and other actors in the tomato sector to test these resistant varieties in both organic and conventional systems. Over four years, trials will be carried out across the country, and the best varieties will be listed in a database showing their suitability for different regions, production systems, and consumer tastes. This network will also be ready to respond to future environmental or plant health challenges.
