Circular strategies in agriculture, like reusing waste and recycling nutrients, are gaining attention to combat climate change. Life cycle assessment (LCA) is commonly used to evaluate environmental impacts but has limitations in addressing circularity aspects. In addition, there is a lack of understanding of how existing circularity indicators can be applied to agricultural systems. The ZILAS project will fill this gap by developing a concept combining LCA and circularity indicators to assess (Swiss) circular agricultural systems. It will define and categorize circular agricultural systems, identify suitable circularity indicators, and test the concept through two case studies: upcycling whey into algae for food and greenhouse vegetable production focusing on waste reduction. ZILAS will contribute to promoting the integration of circularity and life cycle assessment in agriculture.
