Asian knotweeds (Reynoutria japonica complex) are rhizomatous plants that pose an emerging challenge for agriculture in Canton Ticino, where they are increasingly colonizing intensively managed agroecosystems. Although these species are well known for their vigorous vegetative reproduction and dominance in semi natural habitats, they are now establishing persistent populations within crop fields. Their management has therefore become a growing concern for agricultural stakeholders. Despite mounting evidence of negative consequences for agricultural activities, particularly south of the Alps, these impacts remain poorly quantified. The project aims to assess the current extent of Asian knotweed invasion in agricultural areas south of the Alps, quantify their impacts on infested fields, characterize their morphology within crop systems, and produce technical factsheets for farmers as well as a detailed report for experts and authorities. By addressing knowledge gaps specific to agricultural contexts, the project will provide an updated overview of the situation and raise awareness within the agricultural sector to prevent the uncontrolled spread of these invasive plants.
