Embryo transfer has become a commonly used procedure in equine breeding orldwide. It allows for efficient use of valuable mares and mares in athletic competition. In addition, mares with reproductive problems can donate embryos to healthy recipients. This review describes techniques for embryo collection and transfer to the recipient, methods of transportation and cryopreservation, and superovulation procedures. Effects of specific procedures on success rates for embryo collection and pregnancies are discussed, as well as factors affecting the resulting offspring. Furthermore, an outlook is given on recent biotechnological technologies like preimplantation diagnostics and in vitro embryo production.
