RumiSafe: rafforzamento della sicurezza dei sistemi di produzione per ruminanti rispetto ai rischi chimici

Although preventive measures have historically reduced emissions into the environment and bioaccumulation in the animal feed and food chains of some legacy persistent organic pollutants (POPs like PCBs, dioxins…), new threats constantly emerge (PFAS, chlorinated paraffins…). To ensure the chemical safety of meat and milk from ruminants, it is imperative to understand and quantify the exposure and transfer (absorption, distribution, metabolism and excretion: ADME) of POPs in ruminant species. RumiSafe aims to

  1. characterize the route of POP exposure for ruminants,
  2. establish a proof of concept about da fast, thrifty and ethically responsible (3R-compliant) methodological framework for risk assessment embracing in vitro toxicokinetic data into physiologically based toxicokinetic (PBTK) models,
  3. provide innovative strategies and tools for risk monitoring, risk management, and land remediation, for legacy and emerging POPs.

RumiSafe will contribute to the long-term renovation of the methodology for the assessment and management of risks of on-farm POP contamination of livestock and sustain the continuous improvement of feed and food of animal origin safety.
