RumiWel: garantire la salute e il benessere dei ruminanti

To improve resource efficiency and sustainability in cattle farming, production systems must adapt. Key opportunities include animal-friendly housing, preventive health strategies, and optimized management. A grassland-based diet aligns welfare with sustainability by supporting species-appropriate feeding. At the same time, adapting to digitalization is crucial: sensor technology and AI enable critical assessment of management, automated monitoring, and decision support. This project takes a holistic view, focusing on calves, fattening bulls, and dairy cattle. Objectives are:

  1. minimizing pain and injuries in calves by testing alternatives to anti-sucking rings;
  2. improving fattening bull health and welfare via feeding that reduces subclinical acidosis, laminitis, restlessness, and stereotypies;
  3. developing AI-based monitoring tools to detect pain, stress, and disease indicators.

Beyond research, dissemination and economic evaluation will ensure feasibility at national scale. Expected outcomes will deliver scientific, economic, and societal impact through sustainable solutions enhancing welfare and productivity.
