AFF2ORD project is about a whole concept of implementation/integration of microalgae cultures in the present Swiss agricultural context taking into account future drivers to face the climatic transition. The goal is to produce novel nutrition-enhancing, algae-based ingredients for food and feed adopting regenerative production practices (meaning at applying reductions in water usage, arable land, food waste and carbon emissions by “looping” while simultaneously increasing the efficiency and robustness of the biomass produced). The project relies on the meaningful selection of different strains for viability of production over seasons, the formulation of growth media according to the available side streams and the evaluation of different trophic modes for the selected strains (WP1) as well as the proof of concept of the developed lab bioprocess at the big scale including all integration aspects in the specific agricultural context (WP2 & WP3). A biochemical characterization of the biomass is envisioned as well (WP4) and finally, the whole production process is analyzed in a dual-manner: 1) for food safety and risk assessment aspects & 2) through a guided economic assessment (WP5).
